Gatwick Airport Info
Britain ’s second busiest airport is situated south of London and is a lot less busy than Heathrow. Many trans-Atlantic flights, as well as African destinations, depart from Gatwick and the airport consists of North and South Terminals, connected by a monorail.
Both terminals have exchange bureaux, ATMs, airport information desks, shops, duty-free outlets, restaurants and bars. There is a post office in the South Terminal and an adjacent medical centre in Ashdown House offering immunisations.
The airport provides a Fast Track priority service for business class travellers, and a full range of business services at the London Gatwick Hilton Hotel ((+44) 01293 518 080) and the Le Meridien London Gatwick Hotel ((+44) 01293 567 070) nearby.
Gatwick North Terminal has separate arrival areas for domestic and international flights. International arrivals take up to 50 minutes to clear baggage and customs/immigration.
Estimated arrival times can be found on BBC CEEFAX pages 445 and 446 or ITV Teletext pages 185 and 186. By touch-tone phone, dial 0870 0002468 and listen to the instructions.
Each arrivals concourse has an information desk where multi-lingual staff are on hand to deal with enquiries, usually 24 hours a day. Public address announcements are made from the desks and they have message boards. For insurance reasons, no items (including keys, packages etc) may be left at the desks or on the message boards.
For public annoucements please call +44 (0) 870 000 2468.
If you have a special need and require assistance the key to a successful trip is planning. Here are our tips:
- Compare the arrangements offered by different airlines before making your booking.
- Be sure to check whether the cost of any special assistance is included in the price of your ticket.
- Inform your airline of your particular needs in good time.
- Check the policy of your airline if you wish to remain in your own wheelchair to the aircraft door rather than transfer to an airline wheelchair at check-in.
- Bear in mind that there are often long walking distances within airports and that you may need assistance for this reason.
- For details of the type of assistance available, please contact your airline or their handling agent.
